Conjunctivitis

Conjunctivitis or “pink eye”, is the swelling or inflammation of the conjunctiva. The thin, transparent layer of tissue that lines the inner surface of the eyelid and covers the white part of the eye.

Pink eye is most often caused by a viral infection. It also can be caused by a bacterial infection, an allergic reaction or — in babies — an incompletely opened tear duct. Though pink eye can be irritating, it rarely affects your vision.

The infection will usually clear up in 7 to 14 days without treatment and without any long-term consequences. However, in some cases, viral conjunctivitis can take 2 to 3 weeks or more to clear up.

Ciprofloxacin belongs to a class of drugs called quinolone antibiotics. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria. This medication treats only bacterial eye infections.

For more bacterial eye infections better to consult with doctor, he may recommend antibiotics in the form of eyedrops. They are typically used three to four times a day for five to seven days. The dosage depends on your condition and the type of antibiotics your doctor prescribes.
